Heat Treatment
Fabrication methods such as machining, forming, and deep drawing can introduce stresses in this alloy, potentially affecting its thermal expansion behavior.
To minimize these effects, parts should be heat treated at or as close to their finished size as possible.
Annealing
Heat the alloy to 1450°F (788°C) and hold for 30 minutes per inch of thickness, then air cool.
Heating above 1000°F (538°C) relieves stresses caused by cold work.
In general, higher annealing temperatures result in lower hardness levels.
Heat Treating for Lowest Thermal Expansion and Optimum Stability
For the lowest thermal expansion and maximum stability, heat the alloy to 1550°F (843°C) for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
Next, stress relieve at 600°F (316°C) for 1 hour and air cool.
Finally, age at 200°F (93°C) for 24 hours and air cool again.
Since this alloy oxidizes quickly at temperatures above 1000°F (538°C), it is recommended to perform heat treatment in a protective environment such as vacuum, hydrogen, dissociated ammonia, or inert gases.
Thermal Conductivity
Forging
The recommended forging temperature for Super Invar 32-5 is 2000–2150°F (1093–1177°C). Heat the alloy rapidly and avoid prolonged soaking in the furnace, as extended exposure can lead to surface checking caused by oxygen and sulfur contamination.
Grinding
For grinding operations, use a soft silicon carbide wheel that wears without loading. For finishing, start with a wheel roughness of No. 80 grit.
Machinability
Super Invar 32-5 exhibits machinability similar to Type 316 austenitic stainless steel but at a lower efficiency, rated at approximately 25% of AISI B1112. The alloy produces gummy, stringy chips, which can make machining challenging. Using work-hardened bars can improve results.
Standard tool geometries for austenitic stainless steels are effective. Tools should be sharp, well-finished, and rigidly supported. Recommended cutting fluids include:
- A 1:1 blend of sulfachlorinated petroleum oil (with 8–10% fatty oil) and paraffin blending oil
- Water-emulsifiable cutting fluid with polar and extreme pressure additives
Parts must be degreased and cleaned immediately after machining to eliminate sulfur residues that may cause grain boundary embrittlement.
When using carbide tools, surface speeds can be 2–3 times higher than with high-speed steel, and feeds can be increased by 50–100%.
For best results, machining parameters should be adjusted gradually. Optimize speeds and feeds based on the workpiece to balance production efficiency and tool life.
