Characteristics
Alloy 42 is a controlled expansion alloy composed of approximately 41% nickel with the balance iron. Renowned for its excellent thermal expansion properties, it is widely used in glass-to-metal sealing applications. Its expansion rate closely matches 1075 glass and is also suitable for use with 0120 and 0010 glass types. For hard glass applications, Alloy 42 is commonly used in thin-edged tubular seals to ensure consistent and reliable performance.
For sealing processes where hydrogen annealing is not performed, a modified grade Glass Sealing 42 Gas-Free, containing small additions of titanium is preferred. This grade provides gas-free sealing properties, further enhancing the reliability and durability of the seal.
Applications
Alloy 42 is widely used in aerospace and defense applications, particularly in precision electronic components and hermetic glass-to-metal seals required for avionics, satellite systems, and defense-grade instrumentation. Its controlled expansion properties make it highly reliable for critical aerospace assemblies. Workability
Forging
The forging temperature should be 2150–2200°F (1177–1204°C). Avoid prolonged soaking to prevent sulfur absorption from the furnace atmosphere.
Cold Heading
Glass Sealing 42 may be swaged or cold upset.
Blanking or Forming
For clean blanking of Glass Sealing 42, a Rockwell hardness of about B90 is suggested. Where sharp bends are involved in forming finished parts from strip or rods, a hardness not over Rockwell B93 is suitable.
Grinding
A silicon carbide wheel is desirable, preferably a soft wheel which will wear without loading. For finish grinding, a satisfactory grade to start with is No. 80 grit.
Welding
Any of the conventional welding methods can be used. When filler rod is required, Glass Sealing 42 is suggested.
