Kovar Alloy (UNS K94610) is a nickel-cobalt-iron alloy specifically engineered to have a controlled coefficient of thermal expansion, closely matching that of borosilicate glass and ceramics. This unique property makes Kovar indispensable in aerospace and defense applications that require reliable glass-to-metal or ceramic-to-metal seals. Along with excellent dimensional stability, Kovar also offers good mechanical strength, making it a trusted choice for electronic packaging, hermetic seals, and high-reliability components used in satellites, aircraft systems, and defense technologies.

Preparation for Sealing

Step Details
Degassing and Annealing Parts should be degassed and annealed in wet hydrogen atmosphere to prevent carbon pickup. Heat within 1540–2010°F for 20 minutes to 2 hours, then cool below 570°F before removal.
Oxide Film A thin, tightly adhering oxide film is formed by heating to 1200–1290°F in air until a dark gray to slight brown oxide appears.

Workability

Operation Recommendation
Forging Heat quickly, avoid soaking. Forge at 2000–2150°F to prevent sulfur pickup and oxide issues.
Coolant Use Cool Tool with fatty esters to reduce friction and remove cutting heat.
Tooling Use high-speed steel or carbide tooling such as T-15, M-3 Type 2, K-6, #370 Carboloy; ensure tools are sharp and edges are smooth.
Machining Follow specific angles: end cutting 7°, nose radius ~0.005", side cutting 15°, back rake 8°, side rake 8°. Use appropriate feeds/speeds.
Drilling/Reaming Use short drills with thin webs; speeds about 40 FPM, feeds 0.002–0.005" per rev. Reaming: half drill speed, triple feed.
Tapping Use slightly larger tap drills; two or three fluted taps; nitrided tools recommended; speed ~20 FPM.
